Observational constraints on models for the interstellar magnetic field in the Galactic disk

چکیده
Aims. Our purpose is to place firm observational constraints on the three most widely used theoretical models for the spatial configuration of the large-scale interstellar magnetic field in the Galactic disk, namely, the ring, the axisymmetric and the bisymmetric field models. Methods. We use the rotation measures (RMs) of low-latitude Galactic pulsars and combine them with their dispersion measures and estimated distances to map out the line-of-sight component of the interstellar magnetic field in the near half of the Galactic disk. We then fit our map of the line-of-sight field to the three aforementioned theoretical field models and discuss the acceptability of each fit, in order to determine whether the considered field model is allowed by the pulsar data or not. Results. Strictly speaking, we find that all three field models are ruled out by the pulsar data. Furthermore, none of them appears to perform significantly better than the others. From this we conclude that the large-scale interstellar magnetic field in the Galactic disk has a more complex pattern than just circular, axisymmetric or bisymmetric.

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Context. Our position inside the Galaxy requires 3D-modelling to obtain the distribution of the Galactic magnetic field, cosmic-ray (CR) electrons and thermal electrons. Aims. Our intention is to find a Galactic 3D-model which agrees best with available radio observations. Methods. We constrain simulated all-sky maps in total intensity, linear polarization, and rotation measure (RM) by observat...
متن کاملThe Spatial Energy Spectrum of Magnetic Fields in Our Galaxy
Interstellar magnetic fields exist over a broad range of spatial scales, extending from the large Galactic scales (∼ 10 kpc) down to the very small dissipative scales (≪ 1 pc). In this paper, we use a set of 490 pulsars distributed over roughly one third of the Galactic disk out to a radius R ≃ 10 kpc (assuming R⊙ = 8.5 kpc) and combine their observed rotation and dispersion measures with their...
متن کاملMagnetic Field Amplification by Sn-driven Interstellar Turbulence
Within the interstellar medium, supernovae are thought to be the prevailing agents in driving turbulence. Until recently, their effects on magnetic field amplification in disk galaxies remained uncertain. Analytical models based on the uncorrelated-ensemble approach predicted that any created field would be expelled from the disk before it could be amplified significantly. By means of direct si...
متن کاملMagnetic fields in galactic haloes
Magnetic fields on a range of scales play a large role in the ecosystems of galaxies, both in the galactic disk and in the extended layers of gas away from the plane. Observing magnetic field strength, structure and orientation is complex, and necessarily indirect. Observational data of magnetic fields in the halo of the Milky Way are scarce, and non-conclusive about the large-scale structure o...
